As I sat and wondered why today,
A spotted butterfly flew by on his merry way.
Oh, to be like that butterfly I thought out loud;
So free, so free he must be so very proud.
Tonight as I sat feeling very sad and low,
A firefly flew by all aglow.
Oh, to shine so brightly I longingly sighed;
So bright, so bright he probably never cried.
Now I lay in the darkness with many regrets.
A voice gently whispers "Why do you fret?"
Oh, to be so calm and peaceful I speak out plain;
So at ease, so at ease, did you ever know such pain?
As soon as the question rolled off my tongue,
I thought of words I had read and songs I had sung.
He was bruised for our iniquities - that is, for my sin.
The chastisement of my peace was upon Him.
He cried out in the garden and felt so alone.
To be free of His destiny He considered with each groan.
But the pain of the cross He endured willingly for me.
Because of His suffering, I am now truly free.
Every time a tear rolls down my face,
May I remember God's love and amazing grace.
May each butterfly remind me of how free I am.
May each one remind me of the beautiful spotless Lamb.
Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable,
which refuseth to be healed?
